Geoinformatics

The Department of Geoinformatics is concerned with various research problems relating to the acquisition, management, analysis and presentation of space-related information (geoinformation).

Subjects

A particular focal point is the completely automated derivation of digital descriptions of environmental objects on various scales. Not only should geometrical properties be specified, but there should also be, in particular, descriptions of various object properties, for example facade characteristics, terrain formations, movements and thermal lifts. The automated merging and integration of geo-data from completely different sources is an additional challenge. Helpful in this regard are the development of common data models for establishing (semantic) reference systems and the assembly of modern geo-data infrastructures for both administrative and co-operative scientific applications for various disciplines. The numerous arising and continually expanding geo-data banks equipped with modern sensor technologies require intelligent space-related analysis techniques for the derivation of information required for projects such as the derivation of thermal and energy loss in construction planning, the identification of motion patterns in catastrophe management, or biometrics.

Challenges

The Department of Geoinformatics deals with – among others – the following tasks:

  • Fostering internal professional exchange
  • Inititiation/Coordination of research projects
  • Contacts to promoting institutions
  • Contacts to neighbouring disciplines
  • Exchange with the other departments of the DGK
  • Scientific consulting/appraisal
